7. Once I seal the head again (two more coats), I begin detailing the face. I use very sharp watercolor pencils to make thin lines. Apply the strokes very lightly, it's easier to darken them if you need. If you mess up, you can erase them lightly with a white eraser without damaging the pastel underneath.
8. I've drawn a light outline for the eye shape and creases, as well as the lines on the outside of the mouth.
9. I've applied what I call "markers" for the eye color with watercolor pencil as well. This helps me place the acrylic colors where I would like them. It also makes it easier to fill in the whites of the eyes with paint.
10. When you apply the whites of the eyes, use acrylic thinner (or water) and apply in very light, even strokes so the paint doesn't become blotchy. Wait for each coat to dry completely before applying another on top.
11. A dotting tool is an amazing way to get perfectly round pupils and eye highlights. I don't know what I'd do without mine, haha.
12. Following my watercolor pencil outlines, I apply the acrylic using my 18/0 brush in smooth strokes with light coats. I build up smooth layers until I reach my desired effect.
Are you using a sealer before you start using them? If you're not using MSC, it probably won't have enough tooth to work well with watercolor pencils. I use Liquitex and Jacquard airbrush acrylics.
Krylon is pretty much useless when it comes to repainting dolls. It will eventually turn sticky and ruin the faceup. It's not meant to be used on plastics, the ingredients react negatively with each other. You really need to be using Mr. Super Clear Flat if you can; you can purchase it on eBay. Just make sure to use a respirator when you use it, do not breathe it in.
Using watercolor pencils on dolls isn't like using them to paint. They're used dry, not wet, and won't work if you're using an inappropriate sealer like Krylon. I uh, wouldn't recommend licking them either, lol. Try searching for some repaint tutorials and that should help you to figure out how to go about the process . Good luck!
Nope! It will just go sticky and ruin the faceup. MSC is really the best bet. Testors Dullcote is ok if you're just practicing, but not for longevity. Airbrushed Liquitex matte varnish will also work, but you have to wait much longer for it to dry and cure. ZM Finishing spray from Volksusa.com will also work, but I haven't personally tried it.
